How to Clean Basketball Shoes During a Game You're furiously dribbling down the court, trying to outdistance your opponent. Right before you take the final step for a layup, your feet fly out from underneath you. The ball rolls out of bounds, and you're left with a turnover. At that moment you wish you had better traction. The next time you will, and the turnover will instead be 2 easy points. All you need are your hands and a little spit or water. Step 1, Put a dab of spit in the palms of each hand during a break in play, such as during a free throw. Step 2, Rub the spit or water back and forth in your hands to get an even coating from palm to fingertip. Step 3, Bend your right knee and touch the base of the palm of your right hand to the bottom of your shoe, beginning at the toe. Swipe your right hand across the entire sole of the shoe, toe to heel. Return your right foot to the floor. Step 4, Bend your left knee and touch the base of the palm of your left hand to the bottom of your shoe, beginning at the toe. Swipe your left hand across the entire sole of the shoe, toe to heel. Return your left foot to the floor. Step 5, Brush your hands onto your jersey or a nearby towel to remove excess dirt and dust.
